NAKURU

A 3 hour drive from Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi, Nakuru is the home of the St Jerome’s Centre. As Kenya’s 4th largest city, its population of over 500,000 is comparable to that of Edinburgh. Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism are pivotal to Nakuru’s economy.

Nakuru boasts some of the most impressive landscapes and wildlife in Kenya, some just a stone’s throw from the home.

LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

Surrounded by wooded and bushy grassland, lies the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park of the Great Rift Valley. The wide ecological diversity and varied habitats range from Lake Nakuru itself painted pink by its resident flamingoes, to the surrounding picturesque ridges (Baboon cliff is our favourite!) Home to rhinos, giraffe, lions and leopards, a game drive in this breath-taking park is a must see for anyone visiting Nakuru.

MENENGAI CRATER

Menengai Crater is an extinct volcano situated in the Great Rift Valley. Formed around 200,000 years ago and spanning an impressive 90 square kilometres, it is one of the largest craters in the world. Spectacular views of Lake Nakuru can be reached by motorbike, 4×4 or on foot if you’re feeling adventurous!

LAKE NAIVASHA

A day trip from the home to Lake Naivasha is one of our favourites. The lake stretches an enormous 139 square kilometres and home to hundreds of hippos often spotted wallowing close to your boat. The lake, known for its fishing and floriculture, provides employment and income for many locals.

Unfortunately, many Kenyan locals do not get to see the marvels that are on their doorstep. We want our children to have the opportunity to explore their surroundings and wherever this is possible we will make that happen. Here’s the kids enjoying a trip to Lake Naivasha.

FURTHER AFIELD:

HELL'S GATE NATIONAL PARK

A 2 hour drive from the home and the scenic inspiration for the Disney film, Lion King, Hell’s Gate National Park is not to be missed. Renting a bike and cycling past giraffe, zebra, gazelle and warthog is a once in a lifetime experience.

MASSAI MARA

The Massai Mara National Reserve is a world-renowned safari destination, boasting exceptional wildlife. Between the months of July to October, witness wildebeest, zebra and gazelle embark on the Great Migration, one of the ten wonders of the natural world. Situated an 8 hour drive from St Jerome’s, a few days of game driving in the Mara will have you feeling like David Attenborough himself, look out for the Big 5!
